The family dog, Sounder, is a beloved member of the family who helps them during troubled times by hunting and being a loyal companion. The boy goes looking for Sounder but cannot find him anywhere.
When he traces their steps, he finds blood on the ground along with Sounder's ear. He puts the ear under his pillow and wishes for Sounder's return. Sounder, shot in the fracas, simplicityhsd.com and humiliated, the boy has no choice but to begin a difficult transition to adulthood.
He learns to read, and with that skill comes the beginning of greater understanding. Sounder eventually returns — emaciated, battered, but still devoted — and so does the boy's hope.
